Understanding the Salary Determination Process
Oftentimes, the salary
that goes with a position is nonnegotiable.
The salary may have been determined even before the
opening was announced. Human resources and other company policies may have contributed towards
this tough stance.
It is true that, in some cases, there is
a salary range rather than a set amount for any
given position within the company. That gives you
some room to negotiate a salary toward the higher end
of that scale. It is also possible that the hiring manager has enough organizational clout
to ensure that an attractive prospective employee receives a higher salary
offer, if that is what is needed to bring the prospect on board.
Realistically, however, you should be ready to accept the fact
that the salary that comes with a job offer may be nonnegotiable.
This is why it is
critical for you to do everything you can to positively
impact the initial offer the company extends
to you!
